Adolphus Strassman Civil War Diary, 1865.
Adolphus Strassman (1848−1923) lied about his age to enlist in the Union Army at 15 years old, six years after immigrating from Hungary to Fall River, MA with his family. He served as a Private in the 2nd Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Heavy Artillery. This pocket-sized diary, one of the oldest items in the JHC collections, details his daily life as a soldier, including guard watch, camp movements, pay, and letters to and from home. Strassman was honorably discharged in September 1865 and lived the remainder of his life in Fall River, MA.
